Alfred A. Knopf has confirmed plans for a June 23 publication date for The Cartel, the title author Don Winslow has chosen for the sequel novel to his seminal 2005 drug war epic The Power Of The Dog. The sequel novel is the first one edited by Sonny Mehta since he won back Winslow from S&S; it was Mehta who edited The Power Of The Dog and The Winter Of Frankie Machine. The drug game is and always was a billion dollar industry. Here’s a list compiled by The Telegraph of some of the world’s most notorious kingpins to ever “move dat dope”.
Frank Lucas AKA: “Superfly”
Country of operation: USA
Downfall: His house was raided in 1975 where more than half a million dollars-worth of cash was found at the scene. Lucas was arrested and later sentenced to 70 years in prison for over 100 drug-related convictions.
The heroin dealer and organised crime boss operated in Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Renowned for buying his supplies direct from sources in the Golden Triangle Lucas stored the goods in coffins of dead American servicemen. His career was famously dramatised in the 2007 film, American Gangster. He was portrayed by Denzel Washington.
Arizona Legislators Hope To Make ‘Spotting’ For Drug Cartels Illegal

Lawmakers in Arizona are hoping to get a bill passed that will make “spotting” for drug cartels illegal. Surprisingly, there is no laws in place that criminalize “being a lookout” and legislators say that spotters can only be charged with “conspiracy” or “illegal presence”.
With her first piece of legislation, introduced Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Martha McSally joined with Sen. John McCain in focusing on spotters for drug cartels — who conduct covert surveillance to help smugglers dodge border agents.
The director of the Arizona High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area testified Tuesday that lookouts are “fundamental” to the success of drug cartels, but there is currently no law that specifically outlaws what border spotters do.
