Up and Coming Rapper Shot And Killed In N.C. Mall On Christmas Eve

Aspiring rapper Donkey Cartel was shot and killed by a police officer during a mall confrontation on Christmas Eve.

WSBTV reported that Cartel, whose real name is Daquan Antonio Westbrook, was shot at the Northlake Mall in North Carolina after pointing a gun at an off duty police officer.

Donkey Cartel was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Five guys started fighting, two of them ran out of the store when the third guy came out of the store he pulled out a gun,” one eye witness said. “Officer stepped up, said put your gun down, he turned around and opened fire.”

Sources say the shooting was in retaliation to another shooting at the same mall on Thanksgiving where Donkey Cartel’s brother was shot and injured.

The up-and-coming rapper had a lengthy criminal record prior to his death that includes 11 arrest including one for shooting a 12-year-old boy.

His music career includes two mixtapes including one titled “Convicted Felon With a Weapon.” He was popular in the North Carlina hip hop scene.

Hip Hop Pioneers Killer Mike, Big Boi, T.I. Back Rap’s Freedom Of Speech

Hip-hop’s First Amendment rights got a huge boost before the Supreme Court yesterday when three of Atlanta’s G.O.A.T.s, Killer Mike, Big Boi, and T.I. (among others), filed a brief on behalf of a former high school student in Texas who got punished for making a rap song in defense of female students alleging sexual harassment against teachers at the school.

The court may not decide until February whether or not to try the case. A lower court ruled against the rapper’s freedom of speech defense, arguing in part that the song was profane, vulgar, and had “numerous spelling and grammatical errors.”

Killer Mike’s response in an interview with the New York Times: “I see a kid who saw wrong happening and was outraged about it. He wrote a poem about it over a beat.” And on hip-hop’s First Amendment rights, he said: “Anyone who is learned in law is capable of separating art and lyrics, whether you agree with them or not, and actual human behavior. I think the courts understand it when it’s Johnny Cash. I think they understand it when it’s Robert Nesta Marley.”

Deceased Rapper Pimp C’s Son Expresses Dissatisfaction With “Long Live The Pimp” Album

Rapper Chad Butler and his son Chad Butler, Jr.

Legendary rapper Pimp C’s Long Live The Pimp project was released today, December 4. This album is the late rapper’s first project in more than four years.

Pimp C’s widow, Chinara Butler, curated the music for the set.

Pimp C’s son, Chad Butler, Jr., released a statement about “Long Live the Pimp” to express his dissatisfaction with the rollout of his father’s music.

I want Pimp C fans to know that his family – myself and my younger brother Corey Butler – had no part in the creation of this ‘new’ Pimp C album and don’t receive any of the benefits from album sales. The only person who benefits is his wife Chinara, who doesn’t return phone calls or communicate with us at all, and possibly our sister Christian, but even that is debatable. My father was always supportive of myself and my brother, and I know he wouldn’t want us to be forgotten as a part of his legacy.

Pimp C died in 2007 from a combination of factors including a codeine overdose and complications from a pre-existing sleep condition.
