New York City police department officials are attributing a continued rise in gun violence to gang activity and hot weather, after more than a decade of consistently falling shooting rates in the city.
Though there has been a drop in overall crime in New York City, NYPD officials said on Monday that they are working to address the increase in gun activity before the hot summer months, which are correlated with an increase in crime.
Gun violence has been rising in the city for the past two years.
Thousands of dogs are sold from the black market, cooked and eaten in Yulin, in Guangxi province in southern China, as part of the city’s yearly dog meat festival.

Each year during summer solstice, it’s thought that 10,000 dogs are cooked and eaten in Yulin, in Guangxi province in southern China, as part of the city’s yearly dog meat festival. Although it’s not illegal to eat dog meat in China, opinion is divided on how deep the “tradition” really runs.
On Chinese social media in recent years, the Yulin Festival has become a focus for the large numbers of animal lovers – mostly within China – who are against it.But this year, the reaction has gone global. Since May, almost a quarter of a million tweets have been posted using the hashtag #StopYulin2015, with most of the activity coming from the UK, the US and Australia.
One of the loudest voices has been the US animal welfare group Duo Duo, whose change.org petition calling for the cancellation of the event has received more than 200,000 signatures. The group’s campaign video on YouTube has been viewed more than 130,000 times.
“I went to a slaughter house in Yulin a few days ago. The dogs and cats were wearing collars and of different sizes and breeds. They were very friendly,” says Duo Duo founder Andrea Gung. “Dogs are man’s best friend. To kill more than 10,000 of them in one day is wrong,” she says. Activists have also raised health concerns – although the meat is traditionally seen as having health benefits, campaigners claim the dogs transported into Yulin come from the black market and could be diseased. “The consumer thinks they’re safe to eat but they’re not,” says Gung.Duo Duo has intentionally targeted a Western audience with its social media campaign, rather than campaigning within China, as it says it doesn’t want to interfere with the activities of local activists. “The main thing we have done is made people in Yulin realise that their tradition is something from the past, that is perceived negatively from the outside world,” says Gung.

A child killer has begged a court for protection, complaining that he is being taunted and bashed in prison because of his heinous crime Brok Hughes killed his partner’s three-year-old son Zane Bradbury by throwing him against a wall to punish him for ripping some curtains.He had regularly beaten the toddler and his two younger siblings, despite concerns being raised about his heavy-handed approach to discipline.Now he is being routinely bashed in prison and today asked Supreme Court justice Michael Croucher to suppress his name so the beatings can stop.He said since his incarceration last year he had been abused, bashed and threatened and lived in a constant state of fear of attacks by other inmates.He also said he was taunted by prison guards who told him he “should be raped and slaughtered all over the prison.”””
“I was called a f***ing dog kid killer,” he said giving evidence in the Supreme Court.“Every time there’s publicity, there’s always talk about coming into my cell and beating me up,” he said.
“I was being ridiculed by other prisoners, which led to people confronting me physically. I had to defend myself. I was taken down to solitary.”The court also heard there were fears for the man’s young son.But, siding with Director of Public Prosecutions John Champion SC who opposed the application, Justice Croucher said an order wasn’t necessary.Hughes has pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter over Zane’s death on May 9 last year.
He has also pleaded guilty to two counts of intentionally causing injury to Zane and his little brother Chase, who he beat on the face with a coathanger.The court heard on the day he was killed Zane had torn some curtains prompting Hughes to smack him, grab him by the neck and throw him onto his bed. As he landed his head hit a wall causing fatal injuries.Hughes told police later he tried to help Zane regain consciousness, but didn’t call an ambulance for more than 30 minutes.He remained alive in that time but paramedics, who were told Zane had fallen off the bed and hit his head, couldn’t save him.Hughes later admitted the killing to Zane saying the toddler was “being a terror”.“
I really wish this had never happened, I wish I hadn’t have thrown him, I wish I had have known it was serious enough to call an ambulance straight away,” he told police.Mr Champion will consider during the week whether Hughes should face a charge of child homicide, instead of manslaughter. Both offences carry the same maximum penalty.
