America’s boyfriend, Luigi Mangione, is requesting to have his upcoming New York state murder trial livestreamed.
Although I truly hope they livestream this trial, I have to question if there is some kind of defense tactic in play here. Any law scholars that can explain this legal play?
Mangione came to national attention after being accused of the December 4, 2024, fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in New York City. He was arrested several days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a nationwide manhunt.
As of August 2026:
- He has pleaded not guilty to the New York state charges.
- He also faces related federal charges.
- He remains in custody while the criminal cases proceed. The legal process is ongoing, and no final verdict has been reached.
