Lawsuit Exposes Lack of Mental Health Assistance in the Prison System

I spend a lot of my spare time studying and advocating for crime and prison reform. I’ve never been to prison but it’s something I’m extremely passionate about.

I ran across this story and it really triggered me to want to open up more discussion about what can be done behind bars to not only rehabilitate criminals, but create a pipeline for mental health services that are very much needed both during the entry and residency stages.

After watching the system fail over and over my opinion is it does not a bit of good to send criminals to prison and offer no options to help them navigate both in and outside prison life. Doing the opposite will continue to perpetuate more criminal activity and negligence lawsuits such as this one. I hope this family receives the proper compensation.

There also has to be some kind of clinical medical care provided for substance abuse users. Let’s be honest, drugs are real and people use them. Detox is a crucial phase of rehabilitation.

Why not use our tax dollars to address these issues plaguing the prison system. Doing that will in term rehab the criminals. When we rehab the criminals — down goes the crime. It’s simple math. And a win for us all.

According to CNN – A lawsuit has been filed in Indiana on behalf of a man with a history of schizophrenia and substance abuse who died in 2021 while he was being held in solitary confinement.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

The complaint accuses jailers of putting Joshua McLemore in a small, windowless, padded isolation cell, during his nearly three-week stay at the Jackson County jail where he reportedly suffered from dehydration and malnutrition.

Judge Issues Nipsey Hussle’s Killer a Strong Warning About Prison

YIKES!

Did the judge just green -???? ..never mind.

Eric Holder, the man that murdered Compton’s (and the world’s) beloved Nipsey Hussle, has already received a furry a backlash and hell for the killing of the west coast rap royal. His family has received the brunt of the furry as well. It is unclear if it was two of his brothers or cousins that have been murdered out in Compton. His younger brother allegedly committed suicide.

Nipsey was a Rollin 60s Crip. He was also a robinhood of his neighborhood. His murder was catastrophic to both the real world and the music world. Some say Eric Holder signed his own death warrant. He was recently sentenced to 60 to life.

Back in 2022, he was attacked by inmates as he was being transported back to the jail facility from court. (resulting in the photo above) It is unclear if the beatdown was in retaliation for the killing of Nipsey. One can only assume.

Prison politics are deeper than rap. Gang politics are deep than that.

Check out the trailer for the Hulu documentary, “Rap Trap: Hip Hop on Trial” surrounding the use of hip hop lyrics being used against rap artists in court.

The full documentary is now available here.

Atlanta rapper Young Thug is the latest rapper to be hit with charges for his alleged gang ties to the national Bloods street gang.

Prosecutors say Jeffery Williams /pka/ Young Thug, who is allegedly the leader of the gang YSL or Young Slime Life, rapped about his criminal activities in his music under his YSL record label. According to the Atlanta DA’s office, his music lyrics should be admissible in court and used against him for prosecution.

Although Young Thug has claimed gang ties in his lyrics, defense attorney Manny Arora is arguing there is no evidence that rapper has any gang affiliation.

So far four of Thug’s co-defendants have been sentenced to life in prison for their crimes committed while affiliated with the gang. Others have taken plea deals leaving Young Thug on the hook to stand trial under the Rico charge.

He faces life in prison if convicted.
