Now streaming on Netflix, The Perfect Neighbor explores a tight-knit community experiencing relentless harassment by a neighbor whose hostility escalates into a fatal crime.
This chilling documentary chronicles the events leading up to the murder of Florida mother Ajike Owens who was horrifically gunned down by a “Karen” neighbor and exposes the consequences of Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.
The Stand Your Ground law is extremely controversial because it pretty much gives someone the license to kill. The law is intended to allow people the right to defend themselves with deadly force if “in fear for their life,” but it’s nearly impossible to truly gage someone’s accurate fear level at the time of an incident putting the legitimacy of the law into question.
One of the most notable cases of the Stand Your Ground law is the vigilante killing of African American teenager Trayvon Martin at the hands of his white neighbor George Zimmerman. Zimmerman has yet to be charged with any crime even though he engaged his victim and shot him down in cold blood. To this day he walks freely with no legal consequence all because he said he killed Trayvon out of fear, yet he was the aggressor. Most believe the killing was racially motivated just like Ajike’s killing.
Luckily Susan Lorincz was found guilty of the killing Ajike and is now doing a 25-year bid in a Florida prison.
A GoFundMe set up for Ajike’s four children has surpassed $400K since the documentary launched. Click here to donate.
