The murder of Sonya Massey by Sangamon County Deputy Sean P Grayson, an officer with a known criminal history, who was hired by Sheriff Jack Campbell has sent shockwaves through the nation and ignited a nationwide call for accountability and justice.
Apparently the people’s voice has been heard because news broke today that he will in fact retire after previously remaining steadfast and refusing to step down reiterating that he didn’t see a reason to do so. Never mind Sonya’s blood who’s on his hands.
The online Change petition Demand Sheriff Jack Campbell’s Resignation and Investigation into Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department Hiring Practices has reached over 40,000 signatures and counting.
The soon to be ex- sheriff sites political pressure and threats of harm to himself, his family and other deputies as the reason he will retire by August 31.
Good riddance. Let’s continue to demand people in leadership positions be held accountable for their decisions. His decision to hire a troubled hot headed officer cost someone their life.
