Say Her Name: Entire Video Footage of the Shooting Death of Sonya Massey

Sonya Massey

The cold blooded execution of Springfield Illinois resident Sonya Massey is extremely hard to watch, comprehend or digest — especially if you’re a person of color and/or black.

Body cam footage from the deputy who shot and killed the 36 year old mother of two has been posted on the Illinois State Police YouTube channel.

On July 6, an Illinois sheriff deputy’s body camera captures the house call in its entirety which starts with deputies arriving to her Springfield home. The initial 911 call was made by Sonya to report a suspected prowler on the property and led to her being executed in cold blood on the kitchen floor. The deputy who shot her reportedly states that he feared she would throw a pot of boiling water at him so he acted in self defense.

In the 36 minute video, which captures the last seconds of her life, show Sonya seemingly joking with the officers as the officer suggests she remove a boiling pot of water from the stove. When they arrived there was some back and forth about her showing identification, but there didn’t appear to be any major hostility. However, the situation turns serious very quickly as Sonya made a statement about rebuking the deputy “in the name of Jesus” in which he threatens to shoot her in the face before immediately opening fire killing her with a headshot. In the video’s audio no threat can be heard being made by the victim before she was gunned down.

In her hands — two potholders.

Something has to be done to stop this kind of brutality against innocent civilians at the hands of law enforcement. Imagine being in need of help and dying as a result. What’s so sad about this scenario is when the deputies first arrived and confirmed there were no prowlers, Sonya thanked them for coming and told them she loved them before they started leaving the call. At some point they began questioning her about a car in her driveway prompting them to enter her residence and ask for identification. It’s so sad to see what was at best a strange call turn into a shooting death.

It is so important that we elect the right officials in government that will work to mend relations with police and communities instead of encouraging this type of response from those who took oaths to “protect and serve” the public.

A CHANGE.ORG petition calling for a full investigation into the county’s hiring practices has reached almost 35,000 signatures. CLICK HERE to sign.

Sonya Massey was not protected but she was certainly served cold murder.

In the video footage after shooting Massey, whom her daughter confirmed was paranoid-schizophrenic, the officer can be heard calling her a “crazy bitch”. The video has been blocked from playback on other sites so click here to go straight to the link.
