November Is Men’s Mental Health Month

Thanks to Twitter I just learned that November is Men’s Mental Health Month.

I think it is truly amazing to celebrate men while attempting to open up dialogue about mental health wellness. I feel like as a society we condition men from boyhood to suppress their emotions. On the flip, females are taught that is completely acceptable to express our feelings freely. Actually for men most times their expression of emotion is correlated with being girly or weak. This is an extremely dangerous caveat. Men need an outlet to express emotions other than anger.

With all of the intense pressures most men face daily, it is very imperative that we begin to open more meaningful dialogue as well as provide judgement free safe havens for men to share their feelings. If we do this, I think over time we will see many factors of society improve.

I’d like to challenge you to reach out to a male once a week for this entire month, just to check on them. Let them know that you are available to provide a listening ear if needed.

Detroit Teen Suspended for Running Barbershop in School Bathroom

Cameron Tucker was suspended for running lucrative barbershop in Renaissance High School bathroom during study hall

In the words of the late and great US House Representative John Lewis, this is what I would call “good trouble”.

I understand that cutting hair in the men’s bathroom during school hours might be against school policy, but I sure admire this kid’s entrepreneurial spirit. Instead of robbing, selling dope, etc. he chose a legit hustle. Can’t knock the kid for that!

The debate came up recently on social media about whether or not schools should focus more on teaching kids economics & entrepreneurship. I say YES! I feel like school teaches us how to work for others instead of how to have others work for us! Though having a successful corporate career can be very rewarding, cultivating entrepreneurial skills could be the key to successfully unlocking financial wealth. I believe that you can do well working a job but if you do it right you can get rich working for yourself.

As a reward for his hustle, Cameron was awarded an apprenticeship with from Sebastian Jackson, who was also 15 when he learned to cut hair and now owns The Social Club Grooming Co. in Detroit.

Some of Jackson’s clients include former NBA player Jalen Rose, rapper Big Sean and R&B singer Dwele— all Detroit natives — as well as former Lions running backs Reggie Bush and Joique Bell.

Jackson has since become a mentor for Cameron, who said “it was an honor” to meet him, adding that “it was definitely a learning experience, learning where he came from, and his way to where he is now.”

What’s Your Biography Name?

“From Socialite to the Mob” by Brandy Cavalli

A few years ago I started writing my ebook called “From Socialite to the Mob”. At the time I felt it was my life story.

Here we are a few years later and I still haven’t completed chapter one of the book. After uncovering old emotions, it was too painful. The memories and flashbacks were too real & emotional.

Now I’m kind of glad I didn’t write the book yet because there is so much more to the story. This was just a portion of my life, my life has changed tremendously since my younger days.

Maybe one day I’ll write the full biography, but for now I’m still adding up more chapters. It’s amazing how throughout the years, the chapters change and evolve. If you do it right, no two chapters are the same.

I still plan to write “From Socialite to the Mob” but it certainly won’t be the final chapter; more like an introduction. I’ve learned & grown so much over the years. Though sometimes a gift and sometimes a curse, ironically those days are what made me who I am and hope to be.
