Trump surrogates Omarosa Manigualt and Dr. Ben Carson, a Detroit native, accompanied him to the service. The outlet reports that Trump later paid a visit to Carson’s childhood home in southwest Detroit.
As the service began, Trump, who was at the front of the church, began swaying to the hymnal “What A Mighty God We Serve.”
“This has been an amazing day for me,” Trump said after taking the stage. Saying he was speaking from the heart, he called the black church “one of God’s greatest gifts to America” and said that “for centuries the African American church has been teh conscience of our country,” lifting up our nation. According to Fortune Magazine, Colin Kaepernick’s “sit gate” of the national anthem is still causing controversy, now the police union might be planning a protest of their own.
Members of the Santa Clara police union asked the 49ers to take action against Kaepernick or “it could result in police officers choosing not to work at your facilities,” according to a letter obtained by NBC Bay Area.
“I’m already hearing it this week that next week on Monday Night Football, some officers are not going to work,” said Frank Saunders, president of the Santa Clara Police Officers Association, according to NBC Bay Area. “The 49ers are allowing this to come out from an employee and it’s making for a hostile work environment for us at the stadium.”
Kaepernick has defended his protest, responding to critics and telling reporters he is not “anti-American.”
“I realize that men and women of the military go out and sacrifice their lives and put themselves in harm’s way for my freedom of speech and my freedoms in this country and my freedom to take a seat or take a knee, so I have the utmost respect for them,” he said during the 49ers game on Thursday, according to USA Today.
It’s really shocking that the police would be allowed to ‘protest’ doing their jobs in this manner, mainly because their ‘publicized protest’ could put potentially put thousands of fans’ lives in harm’s way. Why make the people suffer for the personal decision of one man? Who’s really being punished here, the man or the people?
