Deceased Rapper Pimp C’s Son Expresses Dissatisfaction With “Long Live The Pimp” Album

Rapper Chad Butler and his son Chad Butler, Jr.

Legendary rapper Pimp C’s Long Live The Pimp project was released today, December 4. This album is the late rapper’s first project in more than four years.

Pimp C’s widow, Chinara Butler, curated the music for the set.

Pimp C’s son, Chad Butler, Jr., released a statement about “Long Live the Pimp” to express his dissatisfaction with the rollout of his father’s music.

I want Pimp C fans to know that his family – myself and my younger brother Corey Butler – had no part in the creation of this ‘new’ Pimp C album and don’t receive any of the benefits from album sales. The only person who benefits is his wife Chinara, who doesn’t return phone calls or communicate with us at all, and possibly our sister Christian, but even that is debatable. My father was always supportive of myself and my brother, and I know he wouldn’t want us to be forgotten as a part of his legacy.

Pimp C died in 2007 from a combination of factors including a codeine overdose and complications from a pre-existing sleep condition.

Melvin Williams, a former Baltimore drug kingpin who inspired — and later appeared on — HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Wire, has died, according to the Baltimore Sun. He was 73.

Williams — also known as “Little Melvin” — was for a time best known for his role in the booming Baltimore drug trade. In 1987, Williams was the subject of a five-part series by then-Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon, who would go on to create The Wire. The drama ran on HBO for five seasons from 2002-08 and is widely regarded as one of the best series of all time.

Following his release from prison in 1996, Williams left his life of crime and even appeared on the show on a recurring basis, playing a character called the Deacon.

On Thursday, Simon paid tribute to Williams, calling him the man “who made me begin to rethink the drug war” on Twitter.
