I’m so late to the party on this docu-series.
Growing up in the south where wrestling is huge, I can remember my grandparents being heavy professional wrestling fans so watching the WWF every weekend was very much a ritual in our house and I loved every second of it.
I grew up in the 80s era. Macho Man Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Andre the Giant were all so exciting to watch as a kid. I can still remember the anticipation of the pay per view events such as Summer Slam, Royal Rumble and WrestleMania. The pay per views were considered to be the biggest and most important shows because they featured the biggest matches and storylines.
I absolutely enjoyed the flamboyance, the smack talking, the brawls, the bodies, the costumes and entertainment aspect of it all. I didn’t care if it was real or fake I was more impressed in the creative team’s ability to keep millions of fans glued to their television sets every week waiting to see what would happen next.
The VICE documentary series “Dark Side of the Ring” is narrated by former WWF professional wrestler Chris Jericho and goes beyond the bright lights and fanfare to explore the unglamorous side of life as a professional wrestler.
From extreme competition to heavy drug use to career ending injuries, the stories featured in the show are beyond compelling and a true testament to how you can have it all one day and hit rock bottom the next. It also features cameos from some of the biggest wrestling stars such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, Jake the Snake, Mick Foley, Triple H and others who were there.
