NASA said Friday that it’s partnering with video company Harmonic to deliver space image and video content to televisions and Internet-connected devices across North America. Together they’re creating the first ever non-commercial consumer ultra-high definition (UHD) channel, expected to launch on November 1, depending on preliminary tests.
Content will be generated from the International Space Station as well as other NASA missions. The channel will also feature “re-mastered footage from historical missions,” NASA says. Harmonic is currently discussing distribution opportunities with pay TV operators to offer the new channel on satellite, cable, and optical networks.
The channel will also be available to stream online for free, but will require at least 13MBps in order to access the UHD content.
If a UHD view on a screen isn’t good enough for you, NASA has also started booking commercial space flights.
