ITT Tech Schools Close Leaving 35,000 Students In Debt And Without Degrees

Welp, it finally happened.

Another for-profit college has gone bust, leaving tens of thousands of students in the lurch.

ITT Educational Services announced on Tuesday that it is shutting down its more than 100 ITT Technical Institute campuses immediately, accusing the federal government of unfairly stripping it of eligibility for student aid.

It’s an abrupt move that will impact 35,000 students who are currently taking classes on campuses and online throughout the United States. Many of them are now left without a degree and saddled with student debt.

ITT said it also eliminated the jobs of the “overwhelming majority” of more than 8,000 employees on Tuesday.

Last week, the Department of Education barred the school from allowing any new students to use federal loans to pay for ITT — and the school promptly stopped new enrollment.

This action did not affect Daniel Webster College, a school in New Hampshire owned by ITT. That campus remains open to its 700 students, but it will be “difficult” for the school to keep operating without the parent company’s support, the president said in an email to students Tuesday.

ITT accused federal officials of forcing the closure and denying it due process.

But the company has been the subject of state and federal probes for years over its recruitment tactics, lending practices and job placement figures.

In order to have access to federal student loans, schools need to be accredited by a government-recognized accrediting agency. ITT Educational Services was found to be out of compliance with its accreditor’s standards twice this year, according to the Department of Education.

Enrollment in for-profit schools increased in the years following the recession when job growth was weak and people were looking to hone their skills or switch to more in-demand careers.

For-profit schools tend to enroll students who rely heavily on federal student aid in the form of grants, loans and military benefits. Without that aid, many students wouldn’t be able to go.

Truthfully, I am surprised they were able to keep the ~~scam~~ school going for as long as they did. I don’t know one real person that ever attended ITT Tech. Do you?

Disgraced Stanford Swimmer Brock Turner Registers As A Sex Offender For Raping Unconscious Girls

Brock Turner, the former Stanford University swimmer who spent three months in jail after being convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, has registered as a sex offender in Ohio.

According to Fox 5 San Diego:

Turner registered as expected in Greene County outside Dayton after being released last week from a jail in California, an official with the Greene County sheriff’s office said.

Turner is required to register as a sex offender for life, and had been expected to return to his family’s home in Greene County after his release Friday.

The 2015 assault drew national attention three months ago, when Turner was sentenced and the victim’s wrenching impact statement went viral. The brevity of Turner’s sentence — six months, with eligibility to be released after three — sparked outrage against the judge and controversy over how the justice system treats sexual assault survivors.

For those unfamiliar with Brock Turner, here is the backstory —

Authorities say Turner, now 21, sexually assaulted a woman after both attended a fraternity party near Stanford in January 2015. A Santa Clara County jury earlier this year found Turner guilty of three felony counts: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

In the victim impact letter she read in court before Turner’s sentencing, the woman described blacking out at the fraternity party and waking up in a hospital with pine needles in her hair, dried blood and bandages on the backs of her hands and elbows, her underwear missing.

She described finally learning what happened to her through news reports: how she was found unconscious behind a dumpster between two fraternity houses, her dress pulled over her shoulders, her bra pulled down, naked from the waist down. Two passers-by stopped when they saw Turner grinding against her unconscious body; he ran and they chased after him, pinning him to the ground until police showed up.

A prosecutor said Turner should get a six-year sentence in state prison, arguing that he lacked remorse and that his victim was especially vulnerable in her unconscious state.

I’ve Met His Friends, But He Doesn’t Acknowledge Us On Social Media

Being a crime based site, I normally don’t post relationship stuff, but every now and then a story will intrigue me enough and I feel compelled to share.

Today’s social media phenomena has created ~~and facilitated~~ an abundant need for people to feel loved, I call it computer love. The need for computer love is so great that a large portion of society, both old and young, now feel that if their ~~real life~~ relationship is not validated by “In a Relationship” or “Married To” social media status, then it is not valid at all. Some will even settle for a “It’s Complicated.”

The need to feel ~~computer~~ loved is real, but is it ruining people’s lives? Apparently so!

I have been dating this guy for almost a year and everything is great between us.

It’s a long distance relationship, but it’s a 3 hour drive and we try to see each other every month or so. He has a very small circle of friends that he actually hangs with on a daily basis and I’ve met them. I haven’t met his mom because she is heavily religious and unless he proposes that’s when she would want to meet me. But, she does know of me. I also met his grandfather.
However, the problem I’m having is that his friends have no knowledge of our relationship on social media, which bothers me because I have trust issues from past relationships. And, he knows this, but according to him the 4,000 plus friends that he has on there doesn’t matter. He says that the people that matter in his life know of me. So, I don’t know if I should be concerned or just leave it alone because I don’t see why a guy wouldn’t want to put that out there if he has a girlfriend if he’s that happy.
