History of the Hip Hop Divas Lil Kim / Foxy Brown Rap Beef

The notorious rap beef between Brooklyn female MCs Foxy Brown and Lil Kim spans decades dating back to the 90s.

While the pair have now been at odds for almost 30 years, what some fans don’t know is that the rap legends used to be friends.

Both Kim and Foxy grew up in the Brooklyn barrow of New York City and began their quest for rap stardom around the same time. Kim has said in past interviews that the two would talk on the phone all night about making it big in the rap industry. In the beginning they supported each other and ran in the same circles around town.

Then something changed. Neither have ever spoken extensively on the reasons for their fallout, but Kim has alluded in previous interviews to jealousy and competition being the main cause.

As a fan of both, I was so hyped when they hit the music scene. Kim was introduced by Biggie and Junior MAFIA.

Foxy Brown was introduced by Jay Z. She later joined rappers Nas and AZ in The Firm although Foxy said in a previous interview that she was originally supposed to join Junior MAFIA before Biggie signed Kim. The video has since been removed.

Until the shots began to fly, most fans were not aware of any behind the scenes conflict between the two rappers. Nor did most fans consider to two to be competition to one another. They were both so dope with their own unique rap styles, fashions and images. Both gave glamorous gangster girl vibes which was exactly what the male dominated rap world needed.

In this throwback VLADTV interview, Lil Cease of Junior MAFIA, said at some point Biggie was helping Foxy with aspects of her career but Kim was always the main pick for the group.

The rap beef started with the two femcees trading shots back and forth on wax and ended with members of their entourage trading real shots in the streets.

At some point both of the rap queens have found themselves in trouble with the law during their careers. Kim ended up going to federal prison for a year behind a shootout at NY’s Hot 97 radio station involving their entourages.

Foxy ended up doing a short stint on Rikers Island on unrelated charges of beating up a nail tech over a $20 manicure.

Over the years, Foxy has expressed interest in a truce but Kim has strongly rejected the notion. At one point, Kim said she would only entertain the possibility of a collaboration for $1 million. Due to inflation, that price has likely gone up.

Fans have expressed their support for a peace agreement between the two sides in hopes for a “Thelma and Louise” style collaboration but it appears that neither will never happen for now.

Personally, I would love to see a reconciliation between the two goddesses of hip hop — for the culture. Nothing would be more powerful than the two queens of rap unifying and showing the younger generation of female artists how to get a real bag. They don’t have to force any friendship, but imagine how much money they could make from just that one hit single.

For now it’s wishful thinking but true fans still hold onto hope.
